Getting started as a new REALTOR® can feel like a lot — new terms, processes, and systems to learn. To make it easier, we’ve combined NMAR’s official onboarding steps with helpful tips and resources you’ll want to tackle early in your REALTOR® career here in Northwest Montana.
Before anything else, you’ll need a real estate license that is hung in one of our REALTOR® member offices and supervised by a REALTOR® member. Then visit the NMAR site and submit your “Become a REALTOR®” application, decide your membership type, pay the application fee, and the prorated dues. Once submitted, your application begins the onboarding process.
We have three types of membership Primary Membership, Secondary In-State Membership, or Secondary Out of State Membership. While you can join multiple associations and MLS groups in Montana, access to the Montana Regional MLS requires membership in NMAR (or one of the other participating associations: MOR, RMAR, HAR, BVBOR, GFAR).
As part of becoming a member, your orientation process includes multiple modules covering important topics such as NAR orientation, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, and fair housing training — all designed to help you understand your rights, responsibilities, and the benefits of membership. You have 30 days to complete orientation from the date your application is processed.
Once your application is in motion, you’ll be prompted to pay prorated SentriLock service fees. This sets you up with access to lockbox tools used throughout the market — including your SentriKey and lockbox services.
You can purchase lockboxes through NMAR, who can then authorize you to use the SentriKey® Real Estate app. The app allows you to manage your lockbox inventory, generate secure FlexCodes® for access, view access logs, and control your personal settings related to lockbox features and more.
After steps 1–3 are completed, NMAR staff submit your information to the Board of Directors for approval. You don’t need to be present for this — it’s a formality that confirms your membership.
While not required, NMAR highly recommends attending the New Member Session and Induction Ceremony. This is one of the best ways to:
- Meet the NMAR staff and leadership
- Learn where to find key resources
- Network with fellow REALTORS®
- Get an introduction to the Montana Regional MLS system directly from a MRMLS representative
You’ll also receive your REALTOR® pledge and pin. Check out our calendar for the next new member session.
Once you’ve completed the initial steps (1–4), NMAR sends your information to Montana Regional MLS so their staff can help you set up your MLS subscription.
Helpful Next Steps After Official Onboarding
Now that your membership is in place, here are some steps we recommend for making the most of your REALTOR® journey:
Log into the Member Portal to update your profile (including adding a photo!), check billing, and manage your subscriptions. A complete profile helps you stay connected and recognizable within the Realtor community.
The NMAR App gives you quick access to your Member Portal on the go. Check announcements, register for events, view resources, and stay up to date with everything NMAR—all from your phone.
Your REALTOR.com profile makes you searchable to clients online and helps build your professional presence immediately. Over 60% of REALTOR.com member profiles are currently unclaimed, which means many REALTORS® are missing out on potential consumer inquiries. Take a few minutes to claim and complete your profile so clients can find you easily and contact you directly. Learn more here.
Early engagement is key to growing your business and building connections. Join a committee, attend networking events, or join community tours. Getting involved helps you meet mentors, stay informed about the local market, and maximize your membership benefits.
NMAR is here for the long haul. Keep track of CE requirements, dues, tech tools, ethics updates, and local market insights. Taking advantage of these resources ensures you stay compliant, informed, and ahead in your career.
Investing in designations and certifications helps you expand your skills, build credibility, and boost your earning potential. Take advantage of the education and programs offered through NAR’s Institutes, Societies, and Councils to stay ahead of the competition.
