Let’s talk GRI in 2026

We've had a few folks reach out with questions about GRI this year. After class cancellations last year, they are simply looking for updates. So, here’s an easy, no stress rundown to help you get back on track and plan ahead for 2026.
If GRI is on your radar, or even just a maybe someday goal, 2026 is a great year to map things out.
The big picture
GRI, or Graduate, REALTOR® Institute, is all about sharpening your skills and building confidence. It’s not just a designation for the sake of letters after your name. It’s practical education you actually use.
The Montana Association of REALTORS® has redesigned the program to make it more flexible and easier to plan around real life.
Here’s what that looks like:
- You need 60 total hours to earn your GRI
- 48 hours must be from Core categories
- Market Knowledge - 12 hours
- Business Skills - 12 hours
- Systems & Tools - 12 hours
- Avoiding Setbacks, Fines & Lawsuits - 12 hours
- The remaining 12 hours can be Core or Elective
- 48 hours must be from Core categories
- Those hours are completed within five years of starting
- If you started your hours before 2026 you will have until 2031 to complete.
- Many classes count toward both GRI and CE
If you want to dig into the full breakdown, MAR has everything laid out clearly here.
We've updated our course schedule to include all GRI information, download below:
The good news: you don’t have to do this all at once
One of the best parts of the updated program is how many local classes across Montana count for GRI credit. That means you can chip away at your hours throughout the year, close to home, instead of trying to cram everything into one event.
MAR has published a statewide list of approved GRI classes for 2026 and it’s a good one. If you’re the type who likes to plan ahead or avoid last minute scrambles, this list is gold.
Quick planning tip: as you look at classes, keep an eye on which Core categories you still need. It makes finishing your GRI way easier down the road.
Don’t forget the in person GRI Conference
Another great option for stacking hours quickly is the 2026 GRI Conference, happening in October.
October 14th & 15th, 2026 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Missoula
- Two 6-hour days (12 hours to count toward the required 60)
- Graduation ceremony for those completing their designation
For members just starting their GRI, attending at least two in-person conferences is required. If you have already completed GRI 101, only one additional in-person conference is needed.
It’s a solid mix of learning, networking, and knocking out multiple GRI hours at once. Definitely one to keep on your calendar if GRI is a priority this year.
A simple way to think about 2026
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here’s a little advice:
- Don’t try to do everything this year
- Pick a few classes that already fit your schedule
- Track your hours as you go, future you will be very grateful
- Use local education to your advantage
Whether you’re just starting GRI or trying to wrap it up, a little planning now goes a long way.
